Inside Look from the Executive Director

For some time, we have recognized that throughout Central and Southeastern Ohio there is a large unmet need for legal assistance with immigration cases among low-income immigrants. In 2021, we were thrilled to hire our first immigration attorney, who came to us with extensive immigration law experience and a legal services background. With initial support from the Columbus Bar Foundation, the American College of Trial Lawyers Foundation, and the Supreme Court of Ohio, we were able to expand the team to three attorneys and a paralegal. While most cases have been in Central Ohio, we have had clients in each of our eight office service areas.

In those two short years, the team has served clients from over 50 different countries. They have opened 812 immigration cases and helped clients with asylum and temporary protected status, assisted victims of crimes with U Visas, represented children in special immigrant juvenile cases, supported families with the naturalization process, and provided counsel to survivors of trafficking.

The team has also prioritized partnerships. Through our work with the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center, we have accepted 148 cases for representation and provided consultations for 327 individuals. Our attorneys assist with our monthly clinics at both the Somali Community Association and the Nepali Bhutanese Community Center. Our staff have given multiple outreach presentations to the Haitian Community Network in Columbus. To ensure that we are maximizing community resources, we partner with Vineyard Community Immigration Counseling on quarterly asylum clinics. To help meet the needs of Mauritanians in our service areas, we are partnering with Catholic Charities of Cleveland, the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation, the Ohio Justice Bus, Vineyard, and the Legal Aid Society of Cincinnati on a pair of asylum clinics this fall. Lawyers, students, and other community members—including those with no immigration law background—are encouraged to volunteer at these clinics. (Details on how to sign up are below.)

We have achieved life-changing outcomes for our clients. We have supported survivors of domestic violence and their families who have suffered horrific violence and war. We have kept children with their parents and caregivers and ensured that unaccompanied children receive needed support.

In doing this important work, we’ve come to better understand the depth of the existing and growing need. While we have expanded pro bono opportunities, partnerships, and internal staffing, we simply don’t have the capacity to represent many who are eligible for our services. Because New Americans are an integral part of the fabric of our communities, we are eager to help them achieve stability and safety—and to continue this work, we need the ongoing support of volunteers, donors, and partners.

"My first conversation with Stephanie Corcoran [LASC Immigration Managing Attorney] left me feeling positive and confident. I was so happy she wanted to help. I didn’t want to send my grandson back to Mexico."

— Maribel, Grandmother of LASC client Dilan, who was separated from his mother while attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico when he was four years old

Development Digest

Immigration Grants

LASC has been fortunate to host a Jones Day/Procter & Gamble Equal Justice Works-funded fellow, specifically focused on immigrant housing outreach. Building on the work of our Immigration and Housing teams, Fellow Jesse Vogel has identified many underserved communities who were unaware of their rights as tenants. Because of Jesse’s initial work, Nationwide Foundation supported the community-focused housing outreach with a $25,000 grant in 2023.

We have also continued to grow our programming with financial support from the following partners over the last two years:

  • The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation’s Afghan-focused grant provided $265,000 to our partnership with the Community Refugee & Immigration Services.
  • The Columbus Foundation provided one-time funding of $130,000 to support refugees in the Columbus community helped Legal Aid set up a direct referral system with our community partners.
  • The Ohio State Bar Foundation provided a $25,000 grant for translating materials.
  • The Harry C. Moores Foundation provided a $10,000 grant to support immigration work.
