Fair Housing Month and Combatting Housing Discrimination

By Kristen Lewis, Fair Housing Advocacy Director

Every April, we recommit our efforts to end housing discrimination and commemorate the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act in 1968 by celebrating Fair Housing Month. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the rental and sale of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), familial status, or disability. Ohio law also prohibits housing discrimination based on ancestry and military status.

Despite passage of the federal Fair Housing Act more than 55 years ago, there is still much work to be done to ensure housing justice for all. We are excited to be engaged in this work and will continue to demand equal housing opportunities for all Ohio residents.

This year, we are especially excited to announce the launch of the Fair Housing Center of Southeast and Central Ohio, a project of Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio, focused exclusively on ending housing discrimination across 36 Ohio counties.

Although our fair housing project has a new name and logo, our efforts to ensure equal housing opportunity in Southeast and Central Ohio started back in 2020. Since that time, we have investigated over 1,100 housing discrimination complaints. More than half of those complaints are based on disability-related housing discrimination such as a housing provider’s failure to grant a reasonable accommodation.

Fighting to end sexual harassment in housing has also been a primary focus of our work, leading us to team up with the Department of Justice to stop repeat offenders. And in Central Ohio, we are fighting for the rights of new Americans to gain access to housing by fighting race, national origin, and religion-based discrimination.

If you or your organization are interested in learning more about fair housing protections and the work of the Fair Housing Center in your community, please reach out to Kristen Lewis at klewis@lasco.org to schedule a fair housing event.

If you want to help us fight housing discrimination in southeast and central Ohio, consider becoming a fair housing tester. Learn more about fair housing testing at www.fairhousingsco.org

Development Digest—Fair Housing Grants

Our Fair Housing work is supported by multiple grants from the following:

  • US Department of Housing and Urban Development – $500,000
  • City of Columbus – Community Development Block Grant - $200,000
  • City of Newark – $20,000

2023 was the first year for our City of Columbus funding. With this funding, we have been scaling up our fair housing testing and enforcement program to affirmatively address the fair housing needs in the Columbus area. We are excited to grow this important work and appreciate the ongoing financial support from our partners.

New Paragraph

Connecting with Pro Bono

When the new owner of the building where Ron was renting a room tried to circumvent his lease by shutting off the water and having the building condemned, his family sought help from Legal Aid. Attorney Valerie Hendrickson represented Ron, a 72-year-old disabled Zanesville resident. She negotiated that the new owner rent Noble a fully equipped apartment at one of his other properties for the remainder of the lease.

Opportunities to Help Out

Tenant Advocacy Project – Ongoing

The Tenant Advocacy Project (TAP) provides legal screenings, counseling, negotiation, and representation for low-income tenants facing eviction in Franklin, Athens, Fairfield, and Washington counties. LASCO staffs each clinic with intake specialists and staff attorneys, who are joined by local lawyers who donate their time and talent for a few hours. Attorneys handle eviction hearings or negotiate resolutions, including drafting agreed entries. To volunteer with TAP, sign up here.

Columbus Advice Clinics – Ongoing

Legal Aid is seeking help at a number of in-person advice clinics this year. Please consider lending your time and talent to one of the clinics listed here. Landlord-tenant issues are the second most common questions we receive at our brief advice clinics. Lawyers willing to receive training in this area and share their knowledge are a huge help!

April Is a Busy Month!

April is also Second Chance Month, so we wanted to take this opportunity to thank our many volunteers who helped make our first expungement clinic at Ohio Means Jobs a success! Because of their support and our fantastic partners—Franklin County Self Help Resource Center, Municipal Court Judges, Municipal Court Clerk’s office, Franklin County Common Pleas Court and Clerk’s office, and Ohio Justice Bus—we were able to serve more than 100 individuals with their record sealing needs. Extra thanks to Barnes & Thornburg and JP Morgan Chase for spending their Days of Service with us!

If you are in the Monroe County area, we are also seeking help for our first 2024 “Fresh Start Friday” Expungement Clinic at the Monroe County Courthouse on Friday, April 26th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Training and support will be provided. You can sign up here
